Being John Malkovich
Being John Malkovich (1999)
Directed by Spike Jonze
I think I saw Malkovich seven times at the cinema, and it was perfect every time. This was one of the first films that incorporated modern pop culture into an intelligent narrative structure, and a film which lead the way for a lot more films and TV shows in a similar vein, with well-known actors playing themselves – a sort of hyper-realism. Charlie Kaufman’s scripts all have their moments of brilliance, but Malkovich is probably the one with the most of those moments overall.
